Lostwithiel
Situated at the head of the navigable part of the River Fowey is the delightful old Stannary town of Lostwithiel - the name comes from two Cornish words meaning 'the place at the end of the woodland'.Formerly the ancient capital of Cornwall, Lostwithiel has a fascinating selection of shops specialising in arts, crafts, paintings and patchwork, and some quite outstanding period architecture. The museum is in the former Corn Exchange and has an interesting collection of artefacts reflecting life in Lostwithiel over the past centuries. The town has a number of excellent restaurants/bistros, several good pubs and is also home to an 18 hole golf course.
There is a wonderful Norman castle, Restormel, in the countryside to the north and the magnificent National Trust owned mansion, Lanhydrock House, is just 4 miles to the north west.
